Released in the years following the debut, Where Tides Defy the Moon marks an important step forward in the artistic evolution of Abandoned Toys. While retaining many of the atmospheric and melodic qualities that characterized the project's early sound, the album expands upon those ideas with greater confidence, broader sonic experimentation, and a growing emphasis on emotional depth and musical craftsmanship.
One of the most notable developments during the creation of this album was the increasing use of modular synthesizer modules as part of the production process. Rather than relying solely on the digital software effects I had been using for years, many sounds were routed through analog hardware modules for processing, modulation, filtering, and textural enhancement. I also began using granular processing, creating a unique bed of sound. This approach introduced new layers of movement, character, and unpredictability into the music, helping to create a richer and more organic sonic palette. The resulting textures often blur the line between electronic sound design and cinematic atmosphere, adding depth to both the foreground and background of the compositions.
The album also marks a period in which piano began to play a more prominent role within the project's music. Few tracks are built on piano alone, yet the instrument finds its way into nearly every composition - serving as a melodic anchor against the surrounding electronic terrain. While electronic elements remain central to the underlying sound, many compositions incorporate piano as a source of warmth and emotional expressiveness. These piano-driven passages create a meaningful contrast between delicate acoustic performance and expansive electronic environments. This balance between traditional musicality and modern production techniques would become an increasingly important aspect of the project's identity in later releases.
Throughout the album, listeners can hear a growing confidence in both composition and production. The music explores a wider emotional range, moving between moments of reflection, wonder, melancholy, and cinematic grandeur. The album also makes extensive use of avant-garde vocal tonal clusters - groupings of pitches that resist forming standard chord structures, designed to evoke atmosphere rather than melody. These layered vocal textures drift across the compositions like shifting harmonic fog, adding an ethereal, almost ritualistic quality that sits unlike anything else in the catalog. It is an approach I am quite proud of, and one that lends the album a uniquely haunting character. At the same time, the album remains firmly connected to the imaginative spirit that inspired the project's earliest work.
Looking back, this release serves as an important bridge between the origins of Abandoned Toys and the more refined and lush direction that would emerge in subsequent years. It captures a period of experimentation, growth, and discovery, while further defining many of the musical characteristics that continue to shape the project's sound today.
